Mathew G. Lewsey 39th Annual Lorne Genome Conference 2018

Mathew G. Lewsey

Prof Lewsey’s lab studies the role of genome regulation in shaping interactions between plants and their environment. Most recently the lab has been applying single-cell and spatial approaches to understand the processes that occur in seeds during germination, as a genome wakes up and growth begins. Mat studied his PhD in molecular plant virology under the guidance of Prof JP. Carr at the University of Cambridge (2002-2006). Between 2006 and 2010 he progressed to study plant-virus-vector interactions as a postdoc in Prof Carr’s lab. In 2010 he was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to study plant epigenetics/epigenomics and hormone biology using genomics and systems biology approaches, which he undertook in the laboratories of Prof JR. Ecker and Prof R. Solano (Salk Institute, USA and Centro Nacional de Biotecnologia, Spain). In 2016, he was recruited by La Trobe University to establish his independent lab, where he is now Director of the La Trobe Genomics Platform and Co-Deputy Director of the ARC Research Hub for Medicinal Agriculture. Mat is also the La Trobe Node Leader of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants For Space. He has spent 2022 on (a very enjoyable) sabbatical as a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall (University of Cambridge).
